Exceptional Scarlet Electrical Discharge Photographed in the Atmosphere

A team of image specialists operating in New Zealand have managed to photograph visual evidence of red lightning, among the most elusive celestial events on Earth, in which glowing scarlet illuminations appear in the atmosphere.

An Unforgettable Night of Discovery

The photographers had originally set out to shoot the galactic core over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the southern region of the country on a night in October, when they chanced upon the unusual spectacle.

Assuming they would be blessed to get optimal conditions that after-dark period, but their shooting session turned into “a truly memorable experience,” one photographer stated.

“He was checking his photographs for a stellar landscape and discovered he had photographed red sprites,” he said. “The discovery was astounding – there was a whole bunch of screaming and shouting and numerous expressions in the darkness.”

Defining Red Sprites

The scarlet phenomena are electrical discharges in the upper atmosphere, produced by thunderstorms. Differing from conventional electrical strikes that strikes downward to the surface, red sprites ascend towards the upper atmosphere, forming structures that are similar to columns, tapered shapes or even bell-shaped organisms. The first photograph of a such an event was recorded – unintentionally – in that year, by a group at the University of Minnesota.

Brief and Dreamlike Sightings

The phenomena last for such a short time – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are seldom seen to the human sight, but a team member got lucky. “I happened to be looking right at one when it happened – an ideal happenstance looking at the correct area of the firmament and I observed a short crimson illumination,” he commented.

Observing the events was a aspiration for the artist, an honored dark sky artist. “It looks like you’re seeing something that is not real, it appears mystical … there is an intense scarlet hue that is visible for an instant, so it is fascinating to witness.”

Advanced and Creative Mastery

Capturing a this phenomenon demands a proficiency with technical photography, as well as an knowledge about scientific principles and creative flare, the individual explained. “This is a highly complex category of art that’s very rewarding as well.”

One of the other individuals said it was among the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his life. “I could see the Milky Way illuminating above the horizon while these enormous red tendrils of energy danced above a thunderstorm hundreds of kilometres away,” he described.

A Unique Photographic Achievement

Based on his understanding, there are no other images depicting red sprites and the galactic core from the southern perspective in the same photograph.

“It was one of those moments when you know you’re witnessing an event you’ll probably never see again.”
