Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he barely escaped a life-threatening incident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two safety personnel darted across the track immediately ahead of his car
The dangerous situation took place on the third rotation when track officials were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was returning to the race following an early pitstop to change his compromised front wing
Moments later, the team's competitor Lawson spoke to his team engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you just see that? I could have... killed them"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was seeing"
"I exited on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and there were just two guys sprinting across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"
"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown somewhere but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a live track marshals can be authorized to just dash across the track in such a way. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"
The sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the events
"Following a turn one incident, race control was advised that wreckage remained on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the FIA
"During the third lap, marshals were notified and made ready to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once every vehicle had gone by"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the directives to deploy officials were canceled and a double yellow flag was raised in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what happened subsequent to that time"
