Relatives within this Jungle: The Fight to Defend an Remote Amazon Group

Tomas Anez Dos Santos was laboring in a tiny glade within in the Peruvian Amazon when he noticed movements approaching through the lush forest.

It dawned on him that he stood surrounded, and froze.

“A single individual stood, directing using an projectile,” he remembers. “And somehow he became aware of my presence and I began to run.”

He found himself face to face members of the Mashco Piro. For decades, Tomas—residing in the small settlement of Nueva Oceania—served as almost a neighbor to these itinerant individuals, who reject engagement with outsiders.

An updated report by a advocacy group states exist no fewer than 196 described as “uncontacted groups” in existence globally. The group is considered to be the largest. It states 50% of these communities might be wiped out within ten years unless authorities don't do more to protect them.

It argues the biggest threats are from deforestation, digging or operations for crude. Isolated tribes are extremely susceptible to ordinary illness—as such, the study says a threat is presented by interaction with evangelical missionaries and social media influencers seeking clicks.

The village is a fishermen's hamlet of a handful of clans, located high on the banks of the Tauhamanu River in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, 10 hours from the closest town by canoe.

The territory is not classified as a protected reserve for isolated tribes, and timber firms operate here.

Tomas says that, sometimes, the sound of industrial tools can be detected day and night, and the Mashco Piro people are observing their woodland damaged and destroyed.

In Nueva Oceania, inhabitants state they are conflicted. They dread the tribal weapons but they hold profound regard for their “kin” residing in the jungle and desire to safeguard them.

“Allow them to live according to their traditions, we can't modify their way of life. That's why we keep our space,” explains Tomas.

Residents in Nueva Oceania are concerned about the destruction to the tribe's survival, the danger of violence and the chance that deforestation crews might introduce the tribe to illnesses they have no immunity to.

At the time in the community, the Mashco Piro appeared again. Letitia, a resident with a young girl, was in the jungle gathering fruit when she detected them.

“We heard calls, cries from individuals, numerous of them. Like there was a whole group calling out,” she informed us.

It was the initial occasion she had met the group and she ran. An hour later, her thoughts was still pounding from terror.

“Since there are loggers and companies cutting down the jungle they are escaping, possibly due to terror and they come close to us,” she explained. “We don't know how they might react with us. This is what terrifies me.”

Recently, a pair of timber workers were assaulted by the Mashco Piro while catching fish. One man was wounded by an arrow to the abdomen. He recovered, but the second individual was located deceased after several days with nine injuries in his frame.

The Peruvian government has a policy of non-contact with isolated people, establishing it as prohibited to initiate interactions with them.

The policy was first adopted in Brazil after decades of advocacy by tribal advocacy organizations, who noted that first interaction with remote tribes could lead to entire communities being decimated by illness, hardship and hunger.

During the 1980s, when the Nahau community in Peru made initial contact with the broader society, 50% of their people perished within a matter of years. In the 1990s, the Muruhanua people faced the same fate.

“Remote tribes are highly at risk—from a disease perspective, any exposure could introduce sicknesses, and even the most common illnesses might decimate them,” says Issrail Aquisse from a tribal support group. “From a societal perspective, any interaction or disruption may be highly damaging to their way of life and survival as a community.”
