The UK government has placed 11 more destinations to its official warning roster regarding the threats of industrial alcohol poisoning from contaminated alcoholic drinks.

The revised advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a global increase in the number of reported cases" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Just recently, officials had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, following several high-profile incidents including the fatal death of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being advised that as little as small amounts of toxic alcohol can cause permanent eye damage or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.

What is Methanol and In what way is it Employed?

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol often utilized in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. It is not meant for drinking.

While it is inherently formed during the creation of beverages, reputable manufacturers lower it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the refining procedure.

However in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to reduce expenses, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to identify.

Authorities' Advice for Travelers

Foreign Office official Hamish Falconer stated that each tourist should recognize the signs of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"When you are having drinks overseas, choose well-known venues and refrain from homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," Falconer advised.

"If something seems unusual, such as a headache that's far more intense than normal or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention right away."

The entire register of nations noted as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol contamination currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
